The Ekiti State government has started picking up destitute, mentally retarded and miscreants from the streets of the State capital, Ado, with a view to making it safe for residents the more.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs, Alhaja Mariam Ogunlade, gave the information while speaking with the BSES in Ado Ekiti.
She explained that the exercise was a globally acceptable practice targeted at individuals perceived and observed to be constituting nuisance and threat to the well-being of the society.
Emphasising that the raiding exercise is one of the constitutional duties of every responsible Government, Ogunlade said it was being done in collaboration with Law Enforcement Agencies, so as to avoid interruption and resistance.
She said that the state government would provide psycho-social support for genuine beggars and destitute and that those considered fit for repatriation afterwards would be reunited with their families.
Alhaja Ogunlade thanked Governor Kayode Fayemi for giving the needed support towards ensuring the success of the exercise.
Also, the Executive Secretary, Office of Disability Affairs, Mrs Olabisi Fatoba, said adequate arrangements had been made for the care of those picked and that they would not be allowed to go back to the society until they were fully rehabilitated.
