The Chairman of Ado North Local Council Development Area Mrs Tokunbo Gbadamosi has said that Gender-Based Violence (GBV) was one of the greatest ills against humanity that requires the deployment of collective efforts and measures in order to ensure its eradication from society.
The Council Boss stated this in Ado while addressing journalists at a two day workshop for Female chairpersons, Wives of Local Government Chairmen and other women stakeholders from across the state.
The programme which was organized by the Office of the Wife of the Governor in collaboration with the Ministry of Local Government Affairs was to raise awareness, educate and develop strategies to combat GBV.
According to Mrs Gbadamosi gender based violence was not only by beating but could be financial violence as a result of a man not providing for his immediate family.
She said girls are not the only gender being abused but males and the aged are also victims of GBV calling on traditional and religious leaders to be up and doing in educating the general public on the need to end gender based violence.
The Ado North LCDA Chairman stated further that the increasing rate of GBV in the country poses a barrier to social cohesion as it demeans the dignity and capability of the feminine gender, thus affecting their capacity to compete favourably with their male counterparts in all fields of endeavour.
She lauded Governor Biodun Oyebanji led administration for organizing the workshop and called on relevant agencies not to relent in the struggle for the elimination of violence against women and girls child.
Highlighting education as a tool in fighting against gender-based violence, Mrs Gbadamosi called upon women to educate the male child, and nurture a foundation of respect for the female gender.
The Ado North Council Boss promised to ensure that such workshop is replicated at her council area with a view to end GBV at the grassroot level.
