As the world marks International Accounting Day, the Chairman of Ado Ekiti and District Society of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria, Mr Adebayo Alabi, has attributed the rife in corruption to the poor remunerations being paid to Accountants in the country.
He made the submission after a health walk round some parts of Ado Ekiti to commemorate this year’s International Accounting Day.
Alabi explained that the health walk was to ensure the fitness of members, because accounting job is sedendtry.
The chairman was of the opinion that corruption was on the high side in the public sector as those in authority usually jettison the advice given by accountants.
“The respect given to Accountant, especially in Nigeria is far from expected considering the input accountant give to both private and public, they are the drivers of the economy, but the respect is not there and that is what we are preaching, Accountant should be given renumerations and preference.”
“We are having increase in corruption because people in authority usually jettison advice given by accountants, and no necessary support and tools to the financial experts,” he said.
Mr Alabi, who described accountants as the drivers of the economy, said renumerations and preference due to them should be considered.
He appealed to government to encourage the body by providing necessary working tools, while also calling on youths to enroll for accounting jobs.
