Crisis erupted at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital in Ado Ekiti on Monday as some personnel of the Department of State Services clashed with doctors and private security guards working on the facility.
The President of the Association of Resident Doctors, EKSUTH, Dr Famous Adeyemi, who was furious at the incident, called on relevant authorities to come to the rescue of health workers following incessant similar attacks.
Dr Adeyemi, while addressing newsmen, explained that a lady who claimed to be a medical doctor attached to the Department of State Services reinforced the operatives of the Service to assault the doctor on duty who she alleged developed a lukewarm attitude to the patient she brought to the hospital.
He alleged that an operative of the DSS shot into the air before arresting one of the hospital security guards after beating him up.
Dr Adeyemi said the guard was thereafter whisked away.
He decried the actions of the security agents and also lamented the regular attacks on health workers in the hospital, calling on the government to find a lasting solution to it.
The President of the Resident Doctors Association explained that the various Unions in the hospital would meet and come up with a resolution that will address the security of life and property of workers.
Also the chairman of the Joint Health Sector Union, EKSUTH Chapter, Mrs Omotola Farotimi gave an eye witness account of the incident.
She corroborated the earlier speaker, noting that the action of the DSS personnel was uncalled for.
A security officer in the hospital, who is now receiving treatment at the Accident and Emergency unit narrated his ordeal, calling for justice.
It was learnt that the representatives of the DSS who came to check on the victims, held a brief meeting with the management of the hospital and said that the Service would open an investigation into the shooting and other assault allegedly perpetrated by its operatives
