Ekiti Government reactivates Covid-19 protocols, restricts gatherings

By Kelechi David

Ekiti State has recorded a total of 180 positive Covid-19 cases in July and this month as the Nation battles the resurgence of the pandemic.

Speaking with Journalists via zoom on the Covid-19 update, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani, said that 95 cases were recorded in July, while 85 were recorded in the last ten days.

He attributed the number of positive cases to the scaling up of testing capacity with an average of 400 persons tested per day.

In view of the surge in number of cases recorded, Dr Filani said that the state government had directed that all the suspended measures to curb the scourge be restored.

He explained that Social and Political gatherings should henceforth be limited to 50 people and that all non pharmaceutical protocols be complied with.

He added that religious houses should ensure that worhippers maintain social distancing, use face masks and wash their hands before entering and when leaving Churches, Mosques and other religious centres.

Government also mandated all shopping malls and other business premises to provide hand washing facilities and ensure the use of nose masks.

He added that Traders are advised to take responsibility by observing all the preventive measures as well, and that schools would be fumigated before reopening for academics.

The Commissioner, who said that the patients were responding to treatment, said that the state would soon take delivery of 95 thousand Moderna Vaccine, urging people to to advantage of it and get vaccinated.

He said that monitoring teams would soon be deployed in local government areas to monitor compliance with the new regulation, as majority of the new cases recorded were found in rural areas.
