The Literacy Promotion Association, LIPAN, Ekiti State University Chapter, has joined in the celebration of the International Language Day.
At an event organized at the Ekiti State University, Ado Ekiti, to commemorate the day, different languages ranging from French, Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa to Isoko were on display.
The State Chairperson of LIPAN in Ekiti State, Prof Graceful Ofodu, said the first of its kind Programme was to emphasize the necessity of preserving mother tongues as cultural heritage.
She said languages, which were pivotal part of human existence, should not go into extinction and should be nutured.
Prof Ofodu said that indigenous languages should be accorded priority, wondering why some categorised them as second class.
Earlier, the Dean EKSU faculty of Education, Prof Matthew Ayeni, reiterated the need for everyone, particularly yorubas, to encourage the speaking of the language.
The program featured presentation in different languages.
The best groups in indigenous languages presentations were rewarded during the event.
