Workers in Ekiti state have urged government to cut cost of governance and maintenance of goverment officials.
This forms part of their resolution as they celebrated this year’s May Day at the Nigeria Labour Congress Secretariat in Ado Ekiti.
The workers who spoke through their leaders, the NLC Chairman, Comrade Kolapo Olatunde and his TUC counterpart, Comrade Sola Adigun also wanted the lopsided structure of Nigeria that gives excessive power to the center addressed.
The workers also called for the implementation of the new minimum wage for grade level 13 to 17.
“We want the immediate intervention of Government to abate ongoing impasse in our tertiary institutions and EKSUTH, covid 19 allowance arrears of health workers, salaries, pension, and leave bonuses should be addressed.
” Implementation of circulation on conversion released by the federal government on 12th April 2021.
However the workers commended the government for “Regular payment of salaries and pension even during covid-19 lockdown, implementation of 2015-2016 promotions, ongoing infrastructural development in the state and free Education for Ekiti children.
This year’s workers day in Ekiti state was devoid of the usual match past, dancing, singing and other social activities that regularly characterize the day.
The program also featured health talk on covid 19, hypertension and diabetes, and lecture on covid 19 pandemic, social and Economic crisis, challenges for decent jobs, social protection and people’s welfare.
In the meantime, prominent Ekiti Indigenes who have distinguished themselves in their different choose fields have been honored and award at a Dinner and Award nights organised by the NLC.
The program held in Abiodun Adetiloye hall in Ado had the Ekiti state first lady, Erelu Bisi Fayemi, Leader of goverment business in the state House of Assembly, and former NLC chairmen in the state, as award recipients.
The lawmaker who represented Ekiti East constituency one in the state house of Assembly, the Late Adejuwa Adegbuyi and the Late Wole Oluleye, were given post humours award at the event.
Responding, the wife of the Ekiti state governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi thanked the labour leaders for the award, reiterating the commitment of the present administration to workers welfare.
Earlier, the NLC chairman, Mr Olatunde said the Dinner Night was to foster mutual relationship among the union leaders and an avenue to fraternize.
