…As First Lady Celebrates with Ekiti Women
The wife of Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Olayemi Oyebanji, has stressed the important roles women play in the development of the family and the society.
Dr. Oyebanji, who stated this in a statement issued to commemorate the International Women’s Day 2023 noted that women have a role to play to address the declining moral values in the society, hence the need for them to be given leadership positions.
The Ekiti First lady who also urged Nigerian women in authority to rise, champion and protect the rights and privileges of women in the country, pointed out that women rights need to be brought to par with that of men to ensure equality and justice.
While noting that women’s participation in politics in Ekiti in particular has increased in recent years, Dr. Oyebanji said that it is “yet not sufficient to fulfill the objectives we set for ourselves, not even the ambition of Beijing Declaration of 1995”.
Highlighting that the theme of this year’s International Women’s Day is “EmbraceEquity”, the Ekiti First Lady pointed out that women should also endeavour to equip themselves and be able to add value to compete in politics, business and other areas of human endeavours.
Speaking further, Oyebanji emphasized the need for women to get acquainted with their rights in the society as well as striving for excellence.
“Women should know that there are specific rights to be enjoyed exclusively by women and there are general rights women enjoy with men.
“The 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees the economic rights of women, where it stated that all citizens have equal opportunity to secure suitable employment and there shall be equal pay at work without discrimination,” Oyebanji stated.
Meanwhile, the First Lady has congratulated Ekiti women, home and abroad for witnessing the annual celebration, urging them to rise up and contribute their quotas to the Ekiti project.
She pointed out that many Ekiti women have excelled in various fields at local and on the international stage, hence the need for others to strive further and make excellent statements for Ekiti women.
