The Ekiti State Chief Judge, Justice John Adeyeye has sought collaboration and support of the state police force in ensuring smooth running of administration of Justice.
Justice Adeyeye who made the plea when he played host to the state commissioner of police, Mr Akinwale Adeniran lamented the untoward attitude of some officers which had stall cases in the state.
He specifically mentioned lack of synergy between the Rapid Response squad and the police legal Unit, congestion of correctional center, security of judges and Magistrates as one of the factors mitigating against the administration of Justice in the state.
He bemoaned a situation where the correctional facility meant for 324 inmates now have 846 inmates owing to the attitude of some officers of the legal unit of the police force.
His words…
“Some cases that ought not to be filed through remand proceedings (Form K) are sometimes filed as such, yet where many of such applications for remand are granted, it usually leads to congestion of the Correctional facility, the facility which was initially meant for 324 inmates now have 846 inmates comprising of 95 federal offenders and 751 state offenders, he described the situation as unhealthy and dangerous”
The Chief judge said he was aware of the challenges of inadequate personnel facing the force but encouraged them to up their game and put in their best.
Justice Adeyeye however lauded the force for creating the judge’s protection unit which serves as bulwark against any serious threat at the judiciary headquarters.
In his response CP Akinwale Adeniran thanked the Chief Judge for the reception and renewed his commitment to stem the tide of crime in the state.
He promised to support the judiciary to decongest correctional center as well work out modalities for smooth working relationship between the Rapid Response squad and the police legal unit.
